Halfway between San Vito Lo Capo and Trapani, precisely in the small Sicilian town of Custonaci, there is one of the most interesting natural attractions of the Trapani coast: we are talking about the Natural Reserve of Monte Cofano.
The transparent waters of the Custonaci sea surround the limestone promontory that divides the Gulf of Castelluzzo from that of Bonagia.
Coming from the reserve through the east entrance, on the Castelluzzo side, you can walk to the Tonnara of Cofano. A unique place with a magical atmosphere, which surrounds the marvelous Torre of Tuono, unique in Sicily for its square shape with concave walls, erected to defend the tonnara and the seaside village in 1500. Diving into the crystalline waters of the tonnara will be a real luxury that will make you feel very special.
Those who love walking or mountain biking can take the path that crosses the reserve and reaches the west entrance on the Custonaci side. Near the cave of the Crucifix you will come across a rustic chapel also dedicated to the Crucifix. It is a square-plan construction overlooking the sea. Next to it are the remains of a small cistern, while inside it is simple and essential, a characteristic wall altar stands out entirely covered with blue Sicilian-style majolica.
Continuing further you will meet one of the ancient watchtowers erected during the Bourbon kingdom to defend the Sicilian coasts: the tower of San Giovanni.
Along the way, the walls of the mountain, rugged and steep, drop sheer to the sea, creating small and delightful coves bathed by crystal clear waters. The more adventurous can instead try to climb the top of the mountain, the path that reaches the top, climbs among rocks, tufts of disa and dwarf palms for 659 meters, giving hikers a unique and spectacular landscape. Visiting the Mount Cofano nature reserve is a unique experience that leaves visitors entranced by the landscapes, colors and scents that characterize the place.
Mount Cofano is a must for tourists, who want to experience one of the most enchanting natural landscapes in Sicily in order to discover the Sicilian wonders.
