What to see in Custonaci

The Sanctuary of Maria SS. of Custonaci

The church of sixteenth-century origins located on the top of the hill is surrounded by a unique natural landscape of rare beauty.

Mount Cofano on one side and Mount Erice on the other are the setting for one of the most representative monuments of the city of Custonaci, a village of 5000 inhabitants a few kilometers from Trapani, an ancient place of worship surrounded by wild nature, the destination of many pilgrimages.

The façade with ogival arched portal and the neo-Gothic style of the interior are the result of the latest renovations and enlargements which took place at the beginning of the 20th century around the ancient fortress church originally built.

The monumental external staircase and the cobblestone pavement with characteristic stone pebbles from the neighboring coves have a particular decorative effect. The central altar located in the apse of the church is the oldest part of the sanctuary and is one of the highest and most extraordinary examples of the Trapani baroque. At the center of it there is a wooden panel painted in oil, depicting the Madonna in the act of breastfeeding the child, venerated by the inhabitants of the place and by those of the surrounding countries as patroness of the whole Agro Ericino territory.
